Twenty-Four Tourism
2023
Data-driven Interactive Installation
Twenty-four Tourism is an interactive device that monitors the environment based on the principles of the twenty-four solar terms. It detects climate and weather conditions in the user’s surroundings and generates corresponding visual symbols. The project aims to re-establish the connection between solar terms as a human legacy and individuals living in an industrialized, digitized society. It investigates how a knowledge system designed for a specific era can adapt to constantly changing circumstances.
Through computing modules, I brought to life water from Luoyang, the birthplace of solar terms, and programmed a generative visual system connecting ancient observations of weather, hydrology, and species dynamics with modern factors: temperature, humidity, and human actions. By presenting contemporary people with a visual tour of Yellow River civilization, I aim to identify where twenty-four solar terms fit into modern life beyond nostalgia.
