"D r e à M 夢中遇見河童" is a captivating audio-visual artwork seamlessly merging traditional handcrafts and online media to unfold a dream narrative rooted in Chinese myths and legends. Presented through a physical mini-album and online audio-visual presentations, it delves into the realm of collective imagination and promotes self-acceptance.
The centerpiece of this creation is a meticulously handcrafted narrative album. Utilizing Chinese handmade rice paper, diverse textile materials, and traditional handicraft techniques like paper-cutting, embroidery, collage, and drawing, the album is a textured masterpiece. Complemented by four chapters of short poems and corresponding music pieces, visualized through Processing programming, the content can be accessed via QR codes hidden within the album.
The title, "D r e à M," with its mixed uppercase and lowercase letters, mirrors the tonal nuances of the Mandarin word "夢 (dream)," symbolizing the blurred boundaries between reality and dreams. The English translation of "夢中遇見河童" is "Meet Chinese Kappa in my Dream," highlighting the traditionally revered yet potentially frightening aspects of mythical creatures. The narrative unfolds through encounters with elves and spirits in the dream mirror, a deeper dive, blessings from mountains and sunlight, and ultimately, empowerment through the dream. The blend of new media art and traditional craftsmanship breathes life into ancient legends reawakes the rich tapestry of myths from millennia ago, inviting viewers to explore the timeless allure of collective human imagination.
